The Big Idea Newspaper

The Big Idea Newspaper is a project of The Big Idea Bookstore & Café aiming to invite others into a new way of thinking. The newspaper is a semi-regular print and digital publication which features critical and creative works from anarchists, imparting and inspiring in ways that only anarchists can.

Interested in submitting? Send your work to us with the genre in the subject line (nonfiction, fiction, poetry, hybrid, artwork, cartoon etc.) to the newspaper’s email address: thebigideanewspaper@gmail.com.

Before sending us your work, be sure to read our submission guidelines below!

Submission Guidelines

  • Submitting is completely free; we do not pay contributors as this is an entirely volunteer operation funded by The Big Idea Bookstore & Café (where everyone is also a volunteer, as a reminder!).
  • As a general principle, “say only that which an anarchist can say.” It’s worth noting that while we don’t only publish anarchists, contributions should have an anarchist bent. We do have both critical and creative editorial expertise on the masthead; we reserve our discretion to publish or not to publish any submission we recieve for any reason unless explicitly withdrawn by the writer.
  • We do accept previously published work! Please indicate where, when, and by who the work was previously published so that we may properly credit where the work originally appeared.
  • We are open to many kinds of submissions including (but not limited to): short fiction, possibly serialized fiction; poetry and lyric essays; art and political cartoons; philosophical treatises; informative articles and investigative pieces; literature, art, and film reviews. The list goes on. Add to this list. Do the damn thing!
  • Articles—350 to  1,000 words.* Sources cited where applicable. Original analysis or storytelling.
  • Poetry—no more than 77 lines.*
  • Artwork or political cartoons—1 to 4 frames.* Always punch up.
  • Regardless of genre—have a message and avoid jargon or at least define it for readers.

* We are open to longer pieces, for sure, but it is at around this point that we would worry about concision. If it’s worth the extra space though, we would happily publish it.
